Muay Thai rash guard: which rash guard for striking, clinch, and sparring

The buying guide in 6 photos. Tap a photo, the answer opens below.

01

Why wear a muay thai rash guard?

In the professional ring, fighters compete bare-chested. At the gym, it is different: sparring, clinch work, and pad sessions keep you in close contact with your partner for entire rounds. A loose t-shirt catches on gloves, twists during the clinch, and clings to your skin once soaked. A rash guard stays close to the body: it does not interfere with elbow strikes or shoulder rotation, and it gives your partner nothing to grab when they reach for the neck.

Striking, clinch, or mixed classes: which rash guard?

For bag work, pad work, and sparring, choose short sleeves: your shoulders move freely and your elbows stay clear. For clinch work, the fit matters more than the sleeves: a close-fitting top gives your partner nothing to grip. If your gym combines Thai boxing with ground work, as in MMA, long sleeves protect your arms from the mat. In amateur competition, each federation sets its own uniform rules: check the regulations before entering.

Which cut for which practice?

Every design covers the whole back and wraps around the sides and sleeves, with no empty space.

In BJJ with the gi, choose long sleeves: they protect the arms from jacket friction and don't ride up during guard passes. In no-gi and grappling, both cuts work; short sleeves leave the shoulders freer. In MMA and wrestling, short sleeves are the most common choice.

  • Short sleeve, from $65No-gi, grappling, MMA, wrestling. 88% recycled polyester, 12% elastane, sizes 2XS to 6XL.
